“An atmospheric brooding image; almost photographic. A monochrome depiction of a ships wake.”

“Two things in particular interest me. Firstly: how is it made? Not photographically or indeed by any other formal print process. It is a skilful manipulation of pigment (liquid, powdered graphite maybe?) on that most delicate of grounds, tracing paper. There are no sharp contrasts but layers of subtle tonal variation describing the action of water and atmosphere so convincingly, hence the brooding quality. Secondly: What is it about? What story does it tell? The horizon is obliterated in places by looming cloud as the ship ploughs on. Where is it going? And where, or what has it come from? The viewer gazes back into the darkness. This frozen moment in a journey allows us to make our own story.”
