This months artwork is Alimentation by Colin Giffard RWA which has been chosen by John Eaves RWA.
Take your time with this painting and it will reveal a very personal aspect of a landscape taking it close to abstraction but not quite abandoning the scene image.
The title Alimentation (or Sustenance) is so apt in that it really does nourish our visual appetites. How carefully jugged his choice of low-tone colour that graduates from top left to varying whites at bottom right: this is a beautiful example of his absorption and love of Bonnard and his mentor/teacher Peter Potworowski at the Bath Academy of Art in the early 50’s.
Being a shy man, I would not be surprised to learn that it was Peter Potworowski that proposed him to show at the RWA and later to be elected as an RWA member.
Clear, thoughtful and well structured though Alimentation is, one must not overlook his rich, sensual and instinctive colour spread. It is high time for a revaluation of Colin’s work and perhaps it will encourage people to examine the other two works in the RWA collection.
I am privileged to have known Colin, his work, and his huge contribution as a teacher at the Bath Academy of Art. His paintings deserve close study, and those who do will be richly rewarded.
